Naturalist Internship 2017

Pay: $300 per month (split into 2 payments during the month)

Housing:  On site housing available if needed

Position: Naturalist/Education Intern (2 keeper positions available)

Hours: open availability preferred, 40 hours a week minimum, days vary

Duration: May 2017-August 2017

Description of Position:  Interns are responsible for assisting staff with the educational message of the park through on site and off site programming, events, home school, summer programming, boy scouts/girl scouts merit badge days and day camps.

Interns will work with a variety of education animals (birds of prey, reptiles, and small mammals) during programs.  Animal care is limited, but interns will have the opportunity to train in these sections.  Raptor handling and training education animal techniques will be thought during the internship.  The main focus of this internship is educational programming.  Each intern will get an opportunity to assist with large animal care with the animal department during their time as an intern at the park. 

Intern responsibilities include the following;

  • Greeting school groups and assisting and conducting various interpretive programs
  • Presenting interpretive programs to the general public
  • Assisting with library programs
  • Interpretive programs at special functions
  • Assisting staff with large events
  • Handling birds of prey, reptiles and small mammals as education animals during programs
  • Trail guide for the main animal trails
  • Monitoring and closing trails at the end of the day
  • Assisting with boy scout, girl scout and home school
  • Helping plan and lead portions of summer day camp
  • Assisting with some large park events
    • Olde English Fair

Project Requirements: (1 project will be completed by each intern)


  • Signs for Pioneer animals
    • Creating public signage for each animal in pioneer
  • Animal nutrition garden
    • Creating our animal nutrition garden
    • Creating signing for the importance of the garden for animal diets
    • Helping to maintain the garden throughout internship

Requirements:  Must be enrolled in college or recent graduate in a related field of science (ie, Education, parks and rec, animal science, biology, environmental science, agriculture...)
