DEFINITION
Operations position includes working with the Operation Manager, other crew members, and volunteers in the day- to day operations work of a complex Park including a zoological park, lodging, banquet facilities, trails, lakes and many buildings. This includes routine and preventative maintenance and repair on buildings, mechanical equipment, vehicles, trains and utility systems. The work is performed under the supervisory direction of the Operations Manager.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Maintains and repairs streets, roads, and public grounds as assigned
  • Maintains parks, trails, and open space as assigned
  • Operates a variety of equipment including 1-ton dump truck, mower, weed eater, snow plow, skid steer, backhoe, roller, tractor, turn-vac, rotor-tiller, striper, sign- making equipment, air compressor, jackhammer, welder, torch set, concrete saw, aerator, trencher, weed trimmer, trailer, vibratory plate, chainsaw, and miscellaneous hand tools
  • Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and vehicles by checking fluid levels of vehicles and equipment
  • Cleans assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Clears weeds and trash in parks and along roadways
  • Assists with repair and maintenance of infrastructures
  • Assists in preparations and setup for special events, which may require flexible scheduling and working on holidays
  • Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and other hazardous materials, following all safety precautions
  • Operated hand tools, vehicles, and equipment, following all safety precautions
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge or ability to learn parks, trails, and open space maintenance
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures for heavy equipment, machines, tools, and toxic agents
  • Physical activities include working in a confined space, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, and lifting for periods of time in various individual conditions. May be required to work on ladders or bucket trucks above ground
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 100 pounds
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions including cold, snow, rain, ice, and heat. May be exposed to odors, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, intense light, and chemicals including cleaners, solvents, paints, and other toxic agents
  • Ability to develop relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written requests and work assignments
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to verbal directions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public
  • Ability to perform required duties in varied and extreme weather conditions
  • Must be able to operate a two-way radio
