Summer internship 2018

Duration:  May 19-August 3, 2018

Hour Requirements: Full Time (40 hours per week- 8 hour shift 5 days a week preferred)

  • Open availability on weekends is preferred

Housing: May be available if needed

Pay: Unpaid

Position: Animal Keeper

Last day to Apply: March 4, 2018

Number of positions available: Two

Description of Position: 

Animal department interns will act as a support team to the full time staff.  They will have the opportunity to work with display and program animals in both the animal and education department.  The main responsibilities for interns will be to care for our reptile/amphibian collections, small mammals, farm animals and birds of prey.

The summer internship will also allow interns the experience to interact and educate the general public.  Interns will be a part of the daily free summer programming offered at the park.  Programs involve guided hikes through Merrill woods, pig races, and keeper charts.

Interns will also learn and assist full time keepers with the following:

  • Assisting keepers with daily animal care routine for large carnivores and herd management
  • Learning how to create diets and enrichment
  • Cleaning animal enclosures
  • Monitoring health and behavior of animals
  • Assisting with veterinary appointments
  • Assisting with public programming and seasonal events
  • Answering general questions about the park for guests (ie. animals, parking, hours, locations of attractions)
  • Assisting with closing trails at the end of the day

 

Special Events:

Special events and programs are a very important part of the wildlife prairie park.  Events are large amount of effort from all staff members.  Interns are preferred to be in attendance on the dates of special events to assist with the event or act as a support for staff by providing animal care.  The dates and events are as follows;

  • Olde English Faire
    • June 22-24
  • Art Day
    • July 14

Requirements:  Must be enrolled in college or recent graduate in a related field of science (ie, zoology, animal science, biology, environmental science, agriculture...)
